Pintles, Driven
The method of choice if you are mounting into brick, stone, or cement.  In existing masonry, a long hole is drilled to accommodate the spike and the spike is cemented into place.  Historically, drive pintle were also used in wood.  This method is very difficult and driving pintles into wood should only be done by a seasoned professional. We stock 1/2" diameter driven pintles. 1.5" tall pintle to fit 1.5" wide straps. 4.5" long shaft with retention barbs.

Note: Driven pintels were frequently used in the 1700's; but jamb mounted pintles are more common today. The down side of using driven pintles in wood is that you have only one chance for perfect alignment.  The driven part is barbed, and if you place it wrong (the pin is crooked one way or another), or in the process you hit and old nail or a knot, there is no turning back. We often recommend the use of driven pintles in masonry, because cementing them into place is a reliable method of installation.
